Our Group Name
At the beginning of the training session the participants were put into various groups each with a facilitator from the Blue Caps Organisation. The idea was that each group, with members from various youth organisations, would come together to work together creating a group project and showing effective leadership.
One of the earlier presentations was about the void between older adults and youths, with youths of each generation being castigated for laziness, disinterest and poor self-worth. The idea of many youths being called mad for their unusual ways of dealing with things, in contrast to the status quo, and in choosing a name for a group we decided to reclaim the phrase mad but put it to good use.
Effective leadership is so often about using the resources available, no matter how ostensibly unappealing, to create excellent results. The word mad has become a pejorative for anything unusual, strange or not in line with the conventions - even when the conventions are wrong. Volunteerism is mad, doing selfless deeds is mad, trying to effect change and speaking out against injustice even at our expense is mad. And that becomes our name - mad. More than just the reclaiming of the word, though, M.A.D. means something. It becomes the mantra for our group's development - Making a Difference. Too often we remain silent and compliant with the ills of society so why not get M.A.D.? And, in our group, it's best when Youths get M.A.D.

Our Blog Name
The thing about madness is that it is swift, and it is contagious. When one persons gets M.A.D. those who are near are in danger of being caught up in its effect too and being tasked with a blog to relay our experiences VELOCITY seemed like an ideal name. Velocity has myriad reasons but most effective for us it is the speed of something in a given direction - the direction towards effecting change. When we get M.A.D. we do it swiftly and with effect in direction of a better country. Like our Group name, our Blog name too means more than just the definition. Because, in our group we do not just use the accepted meanings of things but we manipulate to benefit. VELOCITY refers to the Virile Energetic Logical Opinionated Change-Makers Inspiring Tenacious Youths, which is tied to our goal of effecting change through reaching out to the younger generations. And from our combined names we present to you:

- Leadership
- Responsibility

- Safe Schools
- Safe Communities
- Safe Country
- Put cause above self!
- Take leadership through ownership.
- Have a strong sense of self, civic and community responsibility.
- Do not be afraid to challenge the status quo when it does more harm than good.
- Do not remain silent because issues do not affect you as much.
